The following poem is by one of the participants, Parvez Alam from J.N.U. who attended a workshop on Active Pluralism organised by the Kutumb Foundation with the support of Interfaith Youth Chicago on 9th June 2010. The poem talks about surnames that give away one's caste and how it affects interpersonal interactions between people in our caste-ridden society...The Kutumb Foundation with the help of concerned and sensitised volunteers like Parvez, is striving to create alternate paradigms to understand and find a solution to questions like: why such socio-cultural differences lead to discrimination, give rise to conflict and and result into violence.
Differences, we feel, should be celebrated and not used as a premise to separate people and keep them hateful and suspicious of each other.Interestingly the issue of 'surnames' was also discussed in one of the two questionnaires that was circulated in the first workshop on 'Active Pluralism in College Campuses', held on 6th March 2010...
" नाम "
नाम तो नहीं जानता मैं उसका
पर जब भी देखता है सलाम करता है
शायद वो मेरा नाम जानता हो
पर उसने कभी पुकारा ही नहीं
वो किस स्कूल में है किस सेंटर में है ,
और किस हॉस्टल में है मैंने पूंछा ही नहीं
और न ही उसने मेरे बारे में
जानने की ज़रुरत समझा
फिर भी हम एक दूसरे को जानते हैं
जैसे कोई सहपाठी हो पिछले जन्मों के
और मिल गए इत्तेफाक से एक ही छत के नीचे
जो खुलती है सुबह के नौ बजे
और बंद हो जाती है तब
जब सो चुकी होती है दिल्ली
पर दिल्ली में एक जगह ये भी है
जहाँ होता है सवेरा
क्रांति भरे नारों और गीतों से
स्वागत करते है रणबांकुरे
जो तय करते हैं देश की तस्वीर
और "कोर्स ऑफ़ एक्शन "
की आने वाला कल कैसा हो ?
मैं मिलता हूँ उससे हर रोज़
हाथ मिला के दिल से लगाता भी हूँ
ऐसे कई हैं जिनसे मैं मिलता हूँ
पर नाम नहीं जानता
एक मेरे दोस्त ने कहा,
की यह अच्छा भी है की तुम "नाम " नहीं जानते ?
सवाल के साथ मेरे माथे पर बल पड़ना जायज़ था
उसने कहा भई सीधी सी बात है
जब तुम मुझसे मिलते है तो
बुलाते हो "मिश्रा जी" कहके
जब मिलते हो धीरेन्द्र से तो
कहते हो "यादव" इधर सुनो
और जब पिंटू से मिलके आते हो
तो कहते हो "पासवानवा"मिला था
तुम्हे तो नाम से ज्यादा "टाईटल" की
फिक्र होती है
और उसे भी बोलने में
करते हो "डिस्क्रिमीनेशन "
तो अच्छा है की तुम उसका नाम नहीं जानते
"मिश्रा जी" ने
माफ़ कीजियेगा पप्पू मिश्रा
ने मेरी आँखें खोल दी मेरी
अब मैं नाम पूंछता हूँ
"टाईटल" नहीं
और उससे अच्छा की नाम ही न जाने
और ऐसे ही हाथ मिल कर
दिल तक जाता रहे
अब भी वो देखता है सलाम करता है
शायद वो मेरा नाम जानता हो
